In the Mystery genre, the villian is usually introduced early in the book. McGonagall is the first person we are introduced to right after the Dursleys. Then, when they all get detention for being out past hours, its McGonagall that sends them into the Forbidden Forest as detention. Harry AND Neville, the two possible chosen candidates for destroying LV along with Malfoy, son of a death eater at 11 PM! There are numerous examples of McGonagall acting nervous when something happens,I think she’s faking all that because when Dumbledore gets killed and instead of being nervous, she suddenly is like lightening into his office and cooler than usual.... I realize she may not have been deputy headmistress yet or even head of Gryffindor, I do not know when she took over those roles, however she's a professor, Tuesday is a school day, I would think she should be teaching instead of sitting on a rock wall.... Ok, I would just like to address these few paragraphs. 1. Harry Potter is, first and foremost, a fantasy novel. Yes, there is mystery, but that doesn't make it a mystery novel or primarily in the mystery genre. Even if it was, it's not like it's a rule that you have to introduce the villain early in the book (although Voldemort was introduced very early.) 2. They also had Hagrid. I honestly doubt that Draco could have taken on Hagrid, Harry, and Neville at such a young age. McGonagall is not stupid and would have known this. 3. So... what... McGonagall's just going to fall to peices, is she? Leave them all in danger. NO! She's going to step up because no one else is! She knows she doesn't have the luxury of being able to be nervous! They have to take action, and they have to take it now! Especially with the death of Voldemort. I just told you, McGonagall is not stupid! 4. Voldemort lost his powers during the summer. There were no classes at the time. All I see in this paragraph is someone trying to be smart and trying to hide that there is a lack of evidence. I would address all of the paragraphs, but I feel that I would be wasting my time. It would be a more interesting theory if it was backed up with more legitimate proof. I know I sound incredibly mean saying this. Sorry. I just do not believe that it is possible. I'm not trying to be a know it all or anything, it's just what I think and if somehow she is a DE, I give you full permission to laugh and rub it in my face.

Well thanks for giving me permission to laugh in your face if this is true. I see all the points you make. The one thing is that didn't Harry's parents die in October? I remember that being somewhere in that long statement on the 1st page. So When McGonigal was watching the Dursley's wouldn't that be during the school year? I am just wanting to clarify things. It has been awhile since I read the 1st book and I don't have the time to read it right now with the last book coming out and I am in the process of reading 5 and 6 right now. Now about it being a Fantasy Nove. Yes I agree it is a Fantasy Novel but there is a Mystery in there too. We don't know how Harry is going to kill Voldemort we can speculate about it alot. We don't know how to make a Horcrux besides having to kill someone. We don't know the exact incantation for it. I think you could consider this book a Fantasy Mystery Novel.
I could be wrong about some of the things I have said but I am only human. I just found this theory intriguing. I don't know if I can believe it but would now not be surprised if it is true. Thank you so much for sharing you ideas.

Hehe. Oh wow. I feel incredibly dumb now... They were killed on Halloween. So, yes, there would be school. Forgive me, I get too caught up when I'm writing that stuff, and things get confused in my head, because I have both sides arguing. (I counter myself on everything... I could very easily have a debate with myself.) That DOES make it weird...
But... I don't know... I just cannot believe the McGonagall would be a death eater.
I did say that there was mystery, but that just because there is mystery, it doesn't make it primarily a mystery novel, which is what this lady was trying to say, I think. I don't know for sure, I would have to ask her, but that's how I interpret it.
Hehe... *goes off to laugh at herself*
((Seriously though, sorry guys. That makes me sound like a bad fan, but I've just got a lot going through my head and I'm only human. Most of the time, you should disregard what I say. Haha. Especially if it's kind of a mean post..))

Oh Leigh I loved the post. I have read this theory a couple of times. I don't see it being true either. My son and I have talked about it and he has been able to find holes in the theory too. I know what you mean about debating yourself. I do the same thing. I was typing that stuff up and I would be thinking in my head of the argument against it. I think it show how much we are true fans of Harry Potter. I just know that if this is true I will be very surprised myself. I am laughing and myself too.

Blah... I don't know. I just can't see her being a Death Eater.... She's McGonagall! She's one of those characters that you just got so mad when she was stunned and had to go to Mungo's. It's the people like Snape that I wouldn't be surprised by (even though I haven't made up my mind about him.) McGonagall taught Lily and James, and so wouldn't she know about their families and who Harry had left when they died? She would know that Petunia was the only one left and that Dumbledore would show up there eventually if the rumors were true. Maybe she was trying to see what kind of life Harry would have. I think she had a good reason for being on that wall, whatever the reason may be.
Haha. Ok, rant thing over.

I know what you are saying. I can't picture her being a death eater either that is what makes this theory interesting. Snape is one character I love but hate at the same time. I could see him being for the good side because people want to hate him and they will hate him more because they were wrong about him. I never gave any thought to McGonigal being at the Dursley's. I always wondered why she stayed the whole day. That didn't make any sense to me. She could have been doing what you said just wanting to see what Harry's muggle family was like.

I think she was going to try and convince Dumbledore not to leave Harry with them. Obviously, didn't really happen, but she did protest to it.
As for Snape, and I know this isn't the thread for it, I heard a pretty good theory. What if Dumbledore placed Snape under an Unbreakable Vow, and that's how Dumbledore knew that Snape was good? It would make sense, but now that Dumbledore's gone, he wouldn't be under it anymore, would he?
I can almost see Snape being good. He's one of my favorite characters in the book, even if I hate him most of the time.
Ok, ok... wrong thread! Stopping self...

Yes she could have been trying to do that. There are so many ways to interpret the books that we could argue it for ever.
Now about your Snape comment. I heard that too.

Ah yes many many holes in that theory. Leigh don't worry about being "weird". I am the queen of weird. I debate my self, correct myself, and sometimes talk in third person about myself if I am sleep deprived. I still say Dumbledore had a planned death. Because if you remember Snape made a Unbreakable Vow with Narcissia to help Draco. We could all tell that Draco wasn't capable of murder. So Snape probably went to Dumbledore with the "pickle" and Dumbledore most likely stated that he was far too old and it was his time to "pass on", giving Snape permission to kill him if Draco couldn't. If this is true he probably told McGonagall about it so she would know prior to the death, therefore making her "calm, cool, and collected". Wow I feel powerful! LOL, jk. Thats my theory and I'm sticking to it. Although I still think Snape is a slimy git, but hey every story has one or more of them!!

HAHAHA! I do all of that too, Tessa. Although sometimes I talk about myself in third person even when I'm not sleep deprived.
YES! Incorporating Snape and McGonagall! Doesn't make my post look so out of place. Haha. Anyway! I'm not sure if McGonagall knew, but I think it's very possible that she did. I wonder if we go back and read, that at the beginning of the book McGonagall seemed more upset than usual, because that would certainly help your theory. She would have had time to come to terms with it, therefore making it easier when he did actually die. (I would still be really sad, but I'm not McGonagall, so that's completely irrelevant.)

Yea it would. I am not her either, but if I was that would be a problem!! About the October thing. Mcgonagall was in the Order and most likely one of the few who knew of the prophecy. So she knew that either the Potters or the Longbottoms were going to die. If I am correct the Order would be one of the first notified of the downfall of Voldemort confirming the deaths of the Potters. Dumbledore had made arrangments most likely for Harry to go to Sirius, but seeing as he was framed the next canidate was the Dursleys and McGonagall being his right hand woman[ ] she probably knew about the arrangments and Sirius being framed. McGonagall probally heard Lilly talk about her sister in passing be it good or bad. So there could be one reason for her to stake out the Dursleys. Then there is the closeure[sp] she would get by seeing Harry one last time before he was her student. I imagine that when Voldemort fell the students got a day off to celebrate with family and such, giving McGonagall time to stake out the Dursleys. The map however could have been McGonagall double checking the adress and whereabout around her in case the down fall was staged or something and it was a trap to kill Harry. Wow I am producing theories tonight!!

Ah thanks for those theory busters Tessa. I agree with it being a planned death too. I just wonder if they would have told her. She would have argued with them forever. Now I forget what else I was going to say.
Wow nice theories there Tessa. Where is it mentioned in the books that McGonigal was in the Order the first time? I can't remember reading that.

I bet she would have, but Dumbledore is somewhat stubborn from what I have read and will go with something untill he is forced to tell/stop what he is doing. Death could be the stopper.... You are welcome Monica!!

Oh my eggroll, Tessa's thinking and putting her brain to work! Just kidding!!
Good ideas! Although I don't quite agree with the closure part. But then again... she wouldn't be seeing Harry for the next 10 years.... hmmmm. (Leigh! You have to stop arguing with yourself!) Also, considering what McGonagall told Rosmerta, I think she believed that Sirius was the person who betrayed them, she didn't know he was framed. Maybe she did know about the blood thing though, which is why she knew to go to Lily's sister's.

She probably did know about the blood thingy. I wouldn't put it past her. I believe everyone but the DEs and most likely Dumbledore knew about Sirius' innocence. Though if he did I wonder why he didn't get him a trial. Even if it would have been a lost cause.... Hmm more questions than answers it seems! Where is your brain at Miss McSmarty Smart Pants! lol, jk ::edit:: I don't know if it was mentioned but she probably was because she is very loyal to Dumbledore and most likely would have joined to support him and help others.
